Statement congratulating Zambia and asking for a published results trail
An office statement dated 19 August 2026 congratulates President Hakainde Hichilema on the declared result of Zambia’s 13 August 2026 general election, and asks that concerns in the SADC observer preliminary findings be answered in public.
The statement also recognises Honourable Brian Mundubile and the 1,856,217 votes the office PDF attributes to that campaign. It notes SADC Electoral Observation Mission preliminary findings: a calm atmosphere at 275 of 277 stations visited, and concerns including national registration numbers written on some ballot papers, incomplete ballot reconciliation, and a pause in counting on 14 August that the Mission could not observe.
It asks the Electoral Commission of Zambia to answer material concerns publicly and keep the complete results record accessible. It points to Namibia’s own 2024 petition, dismissed by the Supreme Court on 28 February 2025, as an example of accepting a judgment while still treating a petition as a democratic audit.
It notes that Dr Elsie Nghikembua, chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia, served as deputy head of the ECF-SADC observer mission, and invites her to say publicly what Namibia intends to adopt before Namibians vote again. Those are his remarks. This page does not certify the Zambian count.
